Composting with EM
When Composting with EM Bokashi, fermentation is induced instead of the decomposition of conventional methods. The fermentation of EM composting (an anaerobic process) breaks down organic waste in a much more timely fashion and does not produce any offensive odours which attract insects and other unwanted pests.
The Kitchen Compost System is a vital EM composting tool that allows the anaerobic fermentation process to take place in a sealable container. It implements a liquid strainer that separates the liquid from the organic wastes to prevent putrefaction, another composting flaw, from occurring. This Liquid can then be implemented into the home and garden for many different uses.
Once the composter is full, it must sit sealed for at least one week in order for the anaerobic fermentation to complete. The still living organic waste is ready for implementation around the home and garden.

EM in the home and garden
EM has a very broad sprectrum of uses around the home and garden. To begin with the EM lifestyle, we recommend the first step to be the implementation of the Bokashi kitchen compost system. Using this system will enable you to create compost that is 5 times more nutritious to plants by volume than compost made from conventional methods. It’s liquid byproduct is excellent for a wide variety of uses in Home and Garden Living.
This liquid is great as a very nutrient rich, organic fertilizer for your indoor and outdoor plants as it contains all the nutrients of the organic waste along with the living EM. In maintaining your drains and septic system, the EM compost extract acts to break down clogs and buildups while assisting in the growth of healthy bacteria.
Organic waste that has been fermented fully is ready to be incorporated into the soil where it will continue to ferment and compost into nutrient rich living soil ready to grow within one month. Plant Flowers, Vegetables, and Ornamentals to realize the great benefits of implementing EM into your Home and Garden.
Cleaning and deodorizing with EM
EM and EM derived products can be very powerful in cleaning and deodorizing. Bio Klean and Odor Away harness EM technology to wipe out dirt, grime, mould, mildew and other odour causing bacteria. They do this while repopulating the environments with healthy bacteria which will help to prevent problems from reemerging. See ‘Our Products’ page for more info on these usages.
EM for agriculture
When applied to soil as an inoculant, the Effective Microorganisms function cooperatively to exert beneficial effects on soil quality. Some of the microorganisms in EM are known to produce bio-active substances such as vitamins, hormones, enzymes and antibiotics that can directly, or indirectly, enhance plant growth and protection.
When switching from chemical to organic inputs, initial results are usually poor. This is due to the lack of microorganisms required to break down the organic matter and to release vital nutrients for the plant. If an individual or operation wishes to switch from agriculture chemicals and fertilizers to organic practices, they need to re-establish the beneficial microorganisms in the soil. This is exactly what EM does. The combination of lactic acid bacteria, yeast and phototrophic bacteria help to create a healthy soil ecology. Soil aggregate will improve quickly and watering requirements can decrease by as much as 50% in the first season of application.
EM application has been proven to improve plant health, increase yield and suppress harmful disease and insect infestation in crops and gardens as a result of the diverse population of microorganisms in the soil. Crops, orchards, garden and flower beds will benefit greatly from the application of EM whether foliar feeding, directly applying it to the soil or incorporating into compost. Trees and plants will be healthier and crops will look better, last longer, and taste better.
pH is always a concern for commercial operations and home gardeners in their quest for growing healthy plants. The solution has always been to add lime to the soil. Nature takes care of itself and as such a soil with a healthy and diverse population of microorganisms will maintain normal pH levels. When EM is applied to soil, the microorganisms begin the process of removing chemical residue, modulating pH and breaking down organic matter.
